Fluke bugle sounds marking the end of a fantastic season!

Description
I would venture to say this was by far the best fluke season I've ever witnessed in the Barnegat Inlet area.

How many years would we need to go back in time to have similar numbers of big fluke taken in the bay and on the nearby reefs and wrecks?

Go back 15 or so years and fishing was better. Always had limits and on open bottom

Not being a fluke guy I thought it was great! I had 21 keepers, I only have 19 keeper tuna. Maybe i'm a fluke fisherman and don't know it. Lol!

Tombro - I fished Raritan Bay in the late sixties and the seventies as a kid with my grandfather. I always used those days as a benchmark while fishing in the BI area. I had even resorted to trailering my boat up to Sandy Hook (Leonardo) occasionally to take part in that sometimes awesome fluke fishery. This is the first year I could ever say the fluke fishing here in my backyard was probably as good (size wise) as I have ever experienced in Raritan Bay.

It was pretty close here this year. The place to go back then was Franks Boats, getting on line at like 5 AM to try and get a skiff. Always wound up with a wooden rowboat to which I would clamp my 1954 Evinrude 7.5 OB. We've come a long way.

Mine is long gone....since 1977 or so. Took us from the Atlantic Highlands out to the Rip and back for years. Upgraded to a new Johnson 9.9 in '77, then sold that when I bought my first canyon runner in 1985. smile

For us 2007 was was very similar to this year. The exception being in 2007 the fishing was great right from opening day through the first late summer/early fall storm. This year we didn't start fishing for them until the end of June.

Jersey Joe - Interesting that 2007 was a banner year for you.

This year started with big fish the first week in June for me. It seemed the cold ocean water had driven the fish (and many big fish) inside Barnegat inlet. I was catching 4 to 6 lbers on just about every trip through the entire month of June with just a short run from my lagoon. It was truly a pleasure fluke fishing this season both inside the bay and outside the inlet (outside later in summer). Hated to see the season end!

This was my best year for fluke,..Six keepers in one day for me with three being over 26 inches, then the following week 2 over 26..not to mention quite a few between 18 and 22 too..once they moved out in the ocean it was fantastic!.

Jack Sprat - Wow! That's awesome! You had some impressive days! That's exactly what I was trying to convey! There were so many huge fish around that it was truly exciting to get out and fluke fish this year in the BI area!
